| Subject: | panther's gun on tiger tank? - Capacity and Cost | |
| Date: | Jul 5, 2001 |
| From: | Neville Lord | |
Two other reasons why the German's would have been disinclined to use the
75mm L/70 on the Tiger are:
1) production capacity - the Germans had insufficient 75mm L/70 KwK
production capacity and were having to equip the jagdpanzer IV with L/48 for
most of 1944 due to shortages.
2) Cost the 75mm L/70 was a one piece barrel which ahd to be made on a large
ie expensive very specialist lathe, whereas the 88mm L/56 fitted to the
Tiger 1 was multipart and could be made in parts on smaller more available
lathes.
Also the panther barrel was about 30cm longer than the Tiger 1 barrel and
this could also be a factor.
Cheers
