Saul,
I think that might have been the case a long long time ago, however there have
been vehicles on Dragon boxart that never were released later on (take that
M32 with mine roller attachment on the T26E3 box for instance).
I suspect the sales of their T34/SU series was not good enough to warrant
earlier variants although some sprues were already marked "T34/76" the project
was later canned. I wish people had been voting with their wallets at the time
and bought more T34/85s, SU-100s and SU-85Ms instead of buying Tamiya kits
galore! Now the same people who didn't buy are probably complaining.
Good kits of earlier T34 variants would be most welcome. Personally I'd love
to see an accurate SU-122 or SU-85 :-)
