so many tank detroyer upper hulls/turrets with with the bolts if they never
were used. I understand the doctrine for tank detroyers was speed. Was the
extra armour shipped overseas? Did the Brits use it, if only on the front
hull? Any pictures of the stuff in use? I imagine it would be a bear to
install and remove.
I have done some cursory looking for this in the historical records, plus
extensive research on related vehicles and I have never seen any mention,
description, or drawing on what the supplemental armor might have been. If
Ordnance ever did anything beyond saying "Yeah, we'll get to it when we need
it", it is deeply buried.
There are pictures of vehicles with supplemental armor but a close look
shows that these are field improvisations.
Why? That's the way things happen. The Sherman turret was designed to
allow swapping in various gun mounts and except for the 105mm howitzer, that
was never done. The M10 turret was designed to fit another gun mount too
(but NOT the 17 lb), IIRC.
