The book "Another River, Another Town" written by John P. Irwin describes
his accounts as the gunner of this tank. Dr. Irwin describes in the book a
number of combat actions fought by the Super Pershing and her crew in
contradiction to what Belton Cooper wrote in his book. One in particular
was an engagement with a King Tiger. The description given of the author's
tank is clearly the T26E1 with the external equilibrators and extra armor
and the difference from a regular Pershing is remarked on through out.
There are no photographs in the book other than the rear jacket, which shows
the author (presumably) next to a standard Pershing.
I don't have any reason to doubt the information in Dr. Irwin's book, other
than Hunnicutt and Cooper both say the SP never got into a fight with a King
Tiger. I also see no reason why Dr. Irwin would tell a false tale. His
story is more concerned with the human cost of the conflict, even in the
waning days of the war, rather than a story glorifying anything he or his
crew did.
Any thoughts on this?
