Kurt -
Many thanks for these clarifications. I had hoped that your careful attention
to detail would be reflected in your approach to gathering data, but the
initial postings were sort of scary to an old historic site person.

When I began visiting APG in the 70s I hauled my own ladder along so there
would be no questions about having to climb on the vehicles. At that time there
were usually uniformed personnel in the general area and a routine "why are you
here?" check at the gate, though I cannot guess how protective 70s servicemen
felt about the relic WW II armor that was deteriorating before their eyes. My
wife was kind enough to steady said ladder and occasionally served as a human
reference when a ruler wouldn't do.

Unfortunately, I took almost entirely slides, which have now faded badly and
are not up to snuff for posting, even if I could scan them. Back then, when I
noted in the IPMS publications that I would supply reprints at cost for anyone
interested, one person replied, and we maintained correspondence for several
years. (Jim Turner, hope you're still modeling, and best wishes to you. Each
9/11 will certainly bring you and all your brother firemen to mind!)

Using a ladder is not usually feasible with most inside exhibits, where space
is at a premium and crowds more often present. Please, fellow modelers, ask
permission and understand the guidelines before doing something that would
reflect poorly on others. We all need to remain conscious of the need to treat
our favorite preserved steel monsters with enough care that they endure to
remind many generations of Americans of the courage and strength of will it
takes to fight alongside or against them.
