I was always under the impression they contained the crews possessions
(clothes, blankets, food etc)as well as items like the air ID flag when
supplied.
The original PZ IV didn't have them and they were made ut of light steel
which would suggest little if anything essential to the vehicle's immediate
operations was in there.
