The 42 StuGs were StuG IVs. I got that information from asking questions on
Missing Lynx back when I was building my StuG IV. I got a response from Ron
Klages stating that the only 2 units in Normandy that were operating StuG
IVs in Normandy were the 17th SS and StuG Abt. 1331 of the 331 Inf. Div. He
gathered this information from the records of vehicle shipments to the area.
It shows that the 17th SS arrived in Normandy on June 13, 1944 with 42 StuG
IVs (sorry he doesn't state what other vehicles as my question was about
StuG IVs) and the 331st arrived on August 10, 1944 with 10 StuG IVs. I read
somewhere that most of the 42 StuG IVs of the 17th SS were destroyed in and
around Carentan (it may have been in Spielberger'b book on the StuG III and
IV. I also have the Wydawncitwo Militaria book "Sturmgeschutz IV" and it
has a color plate of a StuG IV of the 17th SS from the Periers area in July
1944. Another place that I found plenty of info on 17th SS StuG IVs is in
the StuG IV photophile on Missing Lynx.

Here are some pictures of 17th SS StuG IVs. The first is from the
Wydawncitwo book and the other 2 (which will be in seperate posts) are
pictures that people scanned and sent
to me when I was looking for info on 17th SS StuG IVs.
