Dave,
Three tone camo developed for China gradually became more subdued as war progressed.
Highly recommend Taki's IJA AFV website.
websitehttp://member.nifty.ne.jp/takixxx/
It has contemporary photos and information on both IJA and IJN equipment along with unit markings, etc. It is also about the only online Ref in English.
Another excellent source are the recently published Japanese Tank books by AJ Press. They are dual language (Czech and English with excellent translations). They cover development, usage, and markings.
The first volume covers initial tank experiments after WW1 up to early 1942. Excellent photos, good artwork. I've been gathering information on Japanese Armor from articles, Japanese pubs, Polish and Russian books, etc. for several years. Mostly only the photos were usable as my translating skills are limited. This single volume had more usable info than my 5 inch stack of stuff.
I've just ordered Vol 2 which covers the last few years of the war.
However, among my stack of stuff, I found references to solid green Late model IJA AFV's turned over to US forces in the Japanese Home Islands. Check out the photos of the Ho-Ni II on Taki's website.
The IJN changed from solid grey to solid green in 1943. Amphibious "Ka Mi" tanks landing at Leyte were green. Eventually, the IJN moved to camo over green.
Also try the Washington Armor Club's website.
They have a large collection of Japanese AFV models in the Gallery.
