..and the answer is YES.

Steve Zaloga covers the late M3's and their frequent misidentification as M3A1's in Concord's US Light Tanks at War 1941-1945. Wish I had had it to hand earlier.

The sponson guns are the main identification point. Lacking these they can be ID'ed from their registration numbers.
