Okay, adding to my confusion about this particular gun's length is the
information given given in the Osprey New Vanguard Number 20, T-34-85.
Steve Zaloga's 1/76 drawings of the T-34-85 Model 1944 on page 9 have
the gun scaling out to 2910.8 mm from mantlet to barrel end. The other
1/76 drawings in the book scale out to this length as well, except for
the T-34-85 Model 1945 drawing on page 16, which scales the barrel of
the Zis-S-53 out to 2986.8 mm from mantlet to barrel end, e.g. a scale
mm off of the other drawings in the same book. That could be my clumsy
measuring though, ruler based vice the caliper treatment, so for all
intents and purposes, those drawings are consistent.
One consistent measurement seems to be the barrel length in calibers.
The Osprey book states it as 54.6. This is consistent with the Fleischer
book, the Squadron Signal book T-34 in Action, and several world wide
web sources. Well, 85 * 54.6 = 4641, the measurements in the Fleischer
book, so the Fleischer reference seems to be the "accurate" one. Where'd
the oddball measures come from in the Osprey book and the Jordi Rubio
barrel?
I'm asking all of this because I was going to write a quick review of
the Jordi Rubio Zis-S-53 barrel since there wasn't one in there. I got
to doing some simple measurements and calculations based on my meager
references, discovered the Jordi Rubio offering doesn't measure anywhere
near what either what the Fleischer, Osprey, or Squadron books have,
well, about 29 percent shorter than it should be, and hence the confusion.
So, in short, who's right? Mathematics tells me the Fleischer
measurements are the "proper" ones. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Steve |
