Track-Link: Where the Facts Matter
Today I found a Modification Work Order, MWO ORD G-501-W31, 7 November 1949
titled "Truck, 2-1/2 ton, 6x6, amphibian (GMC DUKW 353): To remove existing
corrosion and prevent future corrosion on areas inclosed by the side panel
rub rails." This document describes how to open up the side "ribs"
(actually hat sections) so that they don't hold water. The end plates on
each rub rail were removed and a number of four-inch long openings were cut
into the rails as shown on the attached drawing. The openings were cut with
an air hammer and chisel or a cut-off wheel. (Torch cutting was
specifically prohibited as it could cause a problem with the petroleum-based
preservative trapped in the rails.) The edges were ground smooth. The
interior was sand-blasted with a hose and the gunk blown out with compressed
air. The exterior seams where the rails were welded to the hull were
blasted clean from the outside. Zinc chromate primer was next sprayed
inside and out and any runs brushed out. This was followed by spraying a
rust-preventative (?) over the zinc chromate. Runs and lumps were to be
smoothed out here as well. After that last coating had hardened the outside
was repainted olive drab.
Note the date. This does not mean that these slots were impossible on a WW
II vehicle, just very, very, unlikely. Also if a WW II vehicle was
"slotted", it is doubtful it would have ended up exactly matching the
pattern specified four to six years later.
The above information is provided to modelers as service of Track-Link and
as a favor from me. As a courtesy, if you are going to copy this onto your
own website or post it elsewhere, please give the appropriate credit to
Track-Link and Kurt Laughlin.
