MANY THANKS!!! I knew there must an order for those slots, since they're uniform on all the DUKWs I've seen, and you found it!
I've already seen three beautifully built WW II DUKWS that still had the slots, and as a former DUKW owner it broke my heart. Italeri measured up a surviving vehicle and included them; actually good if you're doing a restored truck, and easy to fill for a WW II truck.
Now to track down the modification order for making a notch on the top "rail" to clear the hubs of a 105mm howitzer...
