Scott,
There are a lot of avenues that you could take to create an early M4A1 as used by the British. The easiest would be Verlinden resin conversion. It has the appropriate upper hull, turret w/ mantlet and lower hull. You will need Tamiya's M3 Lee for the suspension.
Another avenue would be Tamiya's M4 (not the M4A3)which would give you the correct turret and lower hull. Suspension could come from the Tamiya M3 Lee, Cromwell Models, The Tank Workshop or Armoured Brigade Models. Armored Brigade has the best detailed set. Upper hulls (the direct vision) could come from Cromwell and The Tank Workshop (buy the Tank Workshop one just because I made the master-ha..ha). Chesapeake Models makes the whole correct turret w/ matlet but The Tank Workshop sells the M34 mantlet as a separate piece. Steve Zaloga did an excellent article in Military Modelling about making an early Sherman.
