One company of 1st Tank was equipped with early M4A1s, used in the Cape Gloucester and Talasea campaigns, and later supported Army troops on New Guinea for a short while. All others were M4A2 and M4A3.

The USMC never adopted the 76mm gun tank, preferring the larger bursting charge of the 75mm round. The only USMC units to have the M4A3 76mm HVSS were a familiarization platoon in HQ Co 1st Tank in 1953 (to train men seconded to the KMC Tank Company, who did have them), and some in 1st Amphibian Tractor Bn (!) used for training infantry replacements, also 1953. The M4A3 76mm HVSS tanks seen in the often-printed Chosin phot are NOT USMC vehicles; they belonged to the Army's Tank Company, 32nd RCT (Captain Robert Drake). But they show up described as USMC tanks, even in the official USMC history of the campaign!
