In the Concord book on German Armor at Arnhem (p 15), there is an
interesting set of photos of two Mobelwagen in Holland - Arnhem region in
Sept 44 (the month zimmerit was dropped).
* Neither AFV has zimmerit, even though they would have been built during
the period zimmerit was applied. This suggests that zimmerit was not
applied in the final assembly plant.
* Both have steel return rollers and later style drive sprockets.
* One has late style vertical exhaust pipes which was a quite new feature in
Sept 44. This and the above point suggest this vehicle was built on new
chassis.
Also the vertical upper hull plates on Mobelwagen were different to the
Panzer 4 (eg plate drivers visor was on & the plates the shield hinges were
bolted to). This would mean that even IF old chassis were used there would
be no zimmeret on these surfaces which were specific to the Mobelwagen,
given flakwagen were not covered by the orders for applying zimmerit. |
