I used to run the Navy's Military Sealift Command Technical (MSC) Library as
a Contractor to MSC. Occasionally MSC's Technical Manager would get
requests for drawings, and he was always very supportive of those. I don't
recall anyone ever being charged for the drawings (and I am referring to
large 36" x whatever roll drawings). I think MSC was just happy to see
someone interested in the ships they operated, and what they did. Every
technical organization within the military has a similar repository for
their technical data, and I suspect most of them would be similarly
supportive. Of course you cant go asking them for current information (no
asking for the process for making Chobham Armor)
I have also gotten some information out of the Navy Historical Center. I
was amazed to the extent they would go to try and track down requested
information. Again, I am sure the Army has a similar organization. All you
have to do is ask.
Hope this helps. I think the real lesson to be learned here, is don't be
shy about asking our government for information. My experience is that they
are usually happy to help. The real challenge is finding the e-mail address
to which you send your request.
