Funnily enough I too have now just read that Von Thoma introduced the sword and shield concept of panzers working with 88 mm Flak in Spain. The great menace there was the T-26 which could make short work of the Pz 1 and Pz II. Withdrawing onto the 88 mm Flak guns was probably borne out of frustration at not having a good battle tank.
I am now intrigued by how the 88 mm flak was layed in the AT role. In the AA role it would certainly need two crew to lay the gun. As even in the Western desert it was knocking out tanks at 2 km, there must have been some sighting telescope supplied?
