Hello Christophe,
Yeah, I read Cookie's review of the Zvezda T-34 Model 1943 -- and several other opinions that highly favored the Zvezda kit over Tamiya.
I bought the Zvezda kits BECAUSE of that review, in fact. I also think that Cookie Sewell could probably recite more T-34 minutae from memory than is contained in every reference book I have on the tank.

Nevertheless, if you compare the two turrets to the AJaKS drawings, you'll find several discrepancies in the Zvezda turret, as well as in the Tamiya. The best way I can put it is that the Zvezda part may be more dimensionally accurate, but less accurately proportioned (at least to my eyes). Let's say it's 3% too wide across the center width, at the widest part of the turret; and 3% too narrow at the rear.
That's only a 3% deviation from dimension, but when you look at the part the proportions are 6% off. With both turrets sitting on hulls, I've compared them to many photos, from different angles. To me, the Zvezda turret looks slightly too large, and the Tamiya turret looks "right" -- despite it's admittedly fat fanny.

Aside from the question of turret accuracy, I don't see much to recommend the Zvezda kit over the Tamiya. I agree about the awful Tamiya lower hull, and personally wouldn't try to build an accurate kit on that platform. I don't think the Zvezda is much better. It's worth buying a DML T-34-85, and backdating it to T-34/76 form, just to get an accurate suspension and better hull. On the other hand, I've seen buildups of both Zvezda and Tamiya T-34's that awed me! I need to start with the most accurate kit possible, or my finished models will likely end up looking like '57 Plymouths.

This is all just my opinion, I do not claim ANY expertise on the subject. I will say that it is an informed opinion because I did buy all the kits, compared them side-by-side and to drawings and photos, and this is the result. The only "editorial" comment intended here is that the Zvezda kits are not as superior to the Tamiya ones as general opinion would indicate.

I'm sure this probably more than anyone wants to read on the subject, so I'll go work on the T-34's.

Take care,

Paul
