Marwin,

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe trailers were attached to tanks such as the M4 by means of a special hitch that designed to be fastened to the rear towing lugs.

I've attached a picture of the M8 trailer (similar in construction to the M10) taken from the Ordnance Catalog. The picture shows the special hitch with built-in pintle issued with the trailer for use with tanks (e-mail me for a larger picture).
