Thanks for the feedback guys.
Well, I've taken the plunge and scratchbuilt a replacement. So the problem is now solved. I just hope I don't find a photo with conclusive proof that the side plates were NOT bolted, three weeks after I finish painting the model.....lol (that sort of thing usually happens to me)
