A few points- As you mention, air recognition panels were standardized for the allies with the white star etc, prior to this the Commonwealth forces used an RAF roundel or a white St Andrews cross, but these were painted on, rather than in the form of flags. The other commonly used marking used was red/white/red panel which was used throughout the war to varying degrees, but again, painted on the vehicles sides, rather than in a fabric flag. Although you somtimes see flags being flown, they are an adornment added by the crew rather than an official recognition mark.
Onto flags, The Union flag (Jack), covers England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales- each one of those countries has it's own flag which a search on the web will provide you with illustrated references. the Canadian flag prior to the sixties(?) consisted of the Canadian coat of arms on a red background with the Union flag in the top left.
If you want to make things really complicated, you're more likely to see the regimental, or county colours in flag form flown from vehicles.....
