Hi Ian,
that's odd. I thought I was pretty sure at least the model 1940 and 1941 did not have them. I have found a small number of pictures that show this, and I have attached one to this message. Although this angle doesn't show it too clearly, another photo from a different angle clearly shows that this is, in fact, a model 1941.

It's not that I don't trust you, I just don't think the article quoted got it quite right. There was a letter in Military Modelling about this subject that said they were introduced in 1942. Although I can't vouch for the accuracy of that date, it was what made me browse our archives of old e-bay.de pictures and what made me conclude that model 1940 and 1941 T-34's indeed did not have them.
