An outstanding discussion - thank you to all. Mark, thanks for taking the time for such lengthy and detailed account of your research. I guess the aluminum engine block and cylinder head colour is simply the colour of the natural aluminum. I thought that aluminum for engine blocks was a postwar development. Presumably, the transmission is also cast aluminum.

Chris Orchard's pictures http://www.gjames.com.au/chris/t34/chris1.html of the T34/85 at Canberra shows a tantalizing glimpse of the engine from the crew compartment. Valve covers are a red primer colour and the engine appears natural aluminum. Note also the grey colour in the crew comparment, although the turret interior is white.Does anyone know if these are original? It looks worn enough to perhaps be.

Having lost the link and reference to the owner, I have attached a picture of a T34/85 engine which appears to have an original finish. Apologies for any copyright infringement - if someone knows the link, please post it. Note red valve covers and natural aluminum block.

I guess that we have lots of scope to be imaginative here and who can say we are wrong :-)
