Andrew,
The Pz 1 and a few other bits and pieces were part of a collection consolidation and re-focus.( Remember the talk a few years ago about trading Hitler's Benz cause it didn't fit the museum's mandate?) As the Canadian forces never fought against the early panzers- this apparently came from a training facility- the museum curators decided to swap it for a number of desirable Canadian armour pieces, though I can't remember what offhand. The rest of the German armour and weapons, with the possible exception of the PzII, seems pretty safe 'cause they were captured in battle. There are rumours that the CWM is still trying to get the Borden Panther for the new building...
It seemed a shame to me to let it go, but I was definitely in the minority of Friends of the Museum when this trade came up and the museum staff are very pleased with what they got in return. Also it's nice to know that the little panzer has found a very good home.
BTW Andrew, Vimy is closed to the public but it is a pretty exciting place to be right now as many of the exhibits are prepped for the new museum.
Bruce
