Hi Paul;
I recently had a long conversation with David Fletcher of the Tank museum at Bovington about this subject and he gave me a very intersting answer. I was asking about color chips or British Standard numbers for the scheme as I was trying to talk David Hannant into making the paint as part of the Xtracolor range. What Mr. Fletcher told me will horrify the "experts" but there was no standard scheme. there is a great deal of confusion as to what colours were used because there was no standing order on what to use. The scheme was applied in the field using whatever sources were available, whether it be captured Italian stocks or even Chalk mined from nearby quarries. ( that one is in print in one units records!). I would tend to believe that the majority would be RAF colours liberated from RAF stores for the large part. I hope this helps and no doubt will cause a storm of controversy.
Cheers,
Jay |
