It was usually factory applied, from late 1944 (November?) onwards. Typically you see it on the Panther G and King Tiger. There are some well known but odd examples of other vehicles Panzer IV, 251/1 D, Hummel,etc. with field applied schemes, but this is not really the norm. The factory applied finish was done with rubber mat stencils and had sharp edges. Field schemes were probably just sprayed or brush painted.
