You should be aware that the large and elaborate markings seen in some photos date from after the main period of fighting, when the tanks were used mainly for beach defense. The light tanks actively participated in the early part of the campaign, but were withdrawn after the bloody action on the Numa Numa Trail on 18 November. After that they were used for beach defense only, and many of the crews served in line-of-supply functions during the fighting for Hellzapoppin Ridge.
The 'large' markings would be appropriate only for the handful of vehicles that participated in the little-known Emirau Campaign.
A lot of this is covered in my book on USMC tanks in WW2, and in a report for the USMC Museums Branch that, unfortunately, is STILL awaiting publication. |
