From what reference material I can find, it would appear that the ring gear was mounted to the hull, behind the protective shield shown in your picture. Note that in the attached picture, the turret position indicator drice appears to engage with such a gear. I have a number of pictures of the drive mechanism from Ausf. D and G, but they're not as clear.

I suspect that a query to one of the museums holding a PzKpfw IV (munster, Samur)would provide a definative answer.
