| I have 7 carriers in my yard at this time. All are mk1 and only one has been restored. The one that is restored is used by the Thunder Bay Military museum for parades , fairs ,and the like.I have spent many years researching , driving , and restoring this type of APC and I can tell you that one of the first things the vets said they did when they hit the beachs was look for a downed yank plane or other donor and put the 50's on them. I do have pictures of the locals(lake superior scotish reg. mtr) in france and Holland with 50 cals mounted. This was a light vehicle compared to the shermans and such, but it is way heavier and more stable than the willys. From what the vets have told me the combination of high speeds, small arms protection, and tracks made these quite the menace in battle. They also installed flame throwers on many with great effect.(they called them "wasps") I'll see if I can dig out some pics and film I have and try to get them on the web for you.A great source for carrier info would be universalcarrier.org . Good luck, Don |
