Good morning, gents,
Thanks, Eelke and Paul for your replies. I have been to thetankmaster many times, but for some reason had missed the T-34 series you linked.
I am actually building the T-34-based SU- series, and I wonder if and how this changes things. These SPGs are much less well covered, and I thought to extrapolate from the tank interior, but what I have been able to collect on the 'Net suggests that, at least for the -100, ammo storage was in open racks on the floor and walls, both horizontally and vertically oriented.
For instance I found the scan copied here of an Egyptian Su-100 in '56. This begs the question of how the cabling was protected if the "ammo box floor" was ot in place in these machines.
Despite the floor boo-boo, I think the Jaguar set is otherwise quite good, for a T-34/85 at any rate. There do appear to be many small details that aren't covered, such as the side wall ready-round racks, incomplete radio set, no interior light or first aid kit, etc. On the plus side there is very nice plumbing detail along the left side, which the Verlinden set doesn't seem to replicate, at least judging from the scans of the box art I could quickly bring up.
I do also have the Eduard interior p/e set, which as Paul says, is rather hit and miss, with the flat, simplified seats being the least useful bits on the frets.
The advent of the Trumpeter kits has proved a boon to the tank interior detail on the Web. There is a very worthwhile Group Build in progress on the FineScale site, and they are giving Liejon Schoot a real run for the money, despite his exquisite modeling technique.
One thing I find curious about the best kit renditions of the -34 series (the Dragon/DML and Trumpeter) is the failure to capture the spring boxes accurately. In the photo series linked by Eelke, one sees that they have radiused corners and a flange at the top. Then, too, there are the retainer 'buttons' for the spring head. Other images I have show a domed cap at the top (at least for the SU-100)and suggest that there was an access panel toward the base on one of the inner faces. Despite much excellent work on the large-scale kit, almost no one has undertaken these mods.
Any help with the SPGs will be much appreciated.
Thanks again,
Stephen J |
