Dear Frank
I notice that Montgomery seems to be still an extremely sensitive subject for many people.
Perhaps there is good documentary evidence that the strategy was for the Americans to tie down the Germans whilst the British broke through into good tank country. If you know of such documents please let me know.
However, it must have been clear to the Allies from around 25th June that the British sector had drawn both the I and II SS Panzer Corps onto its front. Prospects for a clean breakthrough at that point must have been judged as slim. On the other hand, if the extremely mobile American force could smash through the back door despite the poor country then a breakthrough would occur. My reading is that Monty knew this, and so that is how the strategy played out. Don't think it was an accident. But am interested to debate this.
I agree with you about Monty's egotistical character, but he was still a professional.
Regards
Andrew |
