Hi All,
Yes I think Monty was one of the best commanders put in the field, one must remember however that command at that level was somewhat of a political appointment.
Monty was slow, but ignoring his first world war experience, monty had been at war almost 5 years by D-Day as had the rest of the British army, he was acutly aware that each and every choice he had would result in the deaths of good men. He was I think trying to do his duty with out leaving more men in "corners of fields".
The men he commanded knew he was concerned about them, you can see it in the photographs.
One as an armchair historian must be careful passing judgement on these men, one should judge them based on what they knew then, not what is known now.
