The large hatch:
The mechanism was quite simple. The rear hatch of the Ferdinand/Elefant was not designed to be opened except from during gun maintainance, so the large round maintenence hatch was locked in a fixed position with two rectangular steel plates on each side from the inside with the large bolts seen from the outside of the upper box structure. The bolts were of the normal six-angeled type on the inside of the vehicle.
The small hatch:
A small swing-arm bolted to the large hatch with ordinary hinges so the hatch could open (swing) outwards.
On a few vehicles:
The large rear hatch was cut in two pieces and fixed to the upper chassis with hinges. Rain-guards were added on the outside of the vehicle. A more detailed drawing could be seen on The Achtung Panzer Tiger book
