Saul,
From the references I have it does appear to be the simplified version of the regimental insignia of 84th infantry. The actual insignia worn on uniform patches (and probably the shoulder patch worn by the GI standing on the ground) was a red circle with a white axe splitting a piece of timber. The stylised version as shown on the front of the 251 was apparantly also displayed in white on their O.D. vehicles 1944-45.
