| Subject: | Manufacturing historical film footage! Tiger tanks | |
| Date: | Jan 13, 2005 |
| From: | steve Campbell | |
My new DVD
“The Panzer” (the story of Adolf Hitler’s infamous panzer divisions)
Released by “Pegasus” (a division of Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd).
The reason for my purchase of this DVD was the scene selection 5. “The Tiger & The Panther”.
I’m a bit keen on Tigers and I’m always on the look-out for new pics or film. I’m not really interested in the crews or the units that used them only the tank its self (something to do with heavy equipment/engineering that interests me, like all battleships and KV-2s as well as Tigers), blah, blah, blah………
The documentary style film clips would lead you to think that what you are looking at is actual WW2, German footage. The only thing wrong with that is that there is a section that shows two Tigers moving across open ground after contacting Soviet T34s. These two Tigers are distinct for the fact that I think they are both T34 hulls with a “Tiger-ish” superstructure.
Perhaps both had been in some prior WW2 footage such as “Saving Private Ryan” or “Band of brothers”, I’m not 100% sure about their use before this.

The first photo/screen grab shows a Tiger with the distinctive 5 outer road wheels found on all T34-Tiger I ! Hello! How wrong can you get it people?
Other things in the first photo are the slope of the turret roof, very unrealistic, and I think the tanks running on “transport” tracks due to the narrowness of them.

The second pic shows one of these two tanks up close. It’s evident from the gun mantle that this is not a real Tiger. Where the barrel bolts to the mantle is a very prominent outward bulge, nothing like this flat representation.
The bow MG looks decidedly dickey along with the drivers front vision block cover as they are both completely out of proportion in relation to the driver’s plate/upper hull front.
Keep your eye’s out for this dud of a DVD. I must also mention that the narrative is historically inaccurate (they did get the ownership of the tanks correct in relation to the combatants that used them :)).
