Hello again, Ole!
Here's some information. I found a picture in a book 'Battle of the Bulge Through the Lens' by Philip Vorwald (After the Battle Books) page 214.
In the book there's one picture of a knocked out Tiger I. The tank is badly burned and later covered with snow thus making it hard to tell if it had a zimmerit coating, for example. The Tiger seems to be an early type which, I think, is very interesting. It has spare tracks attached to its front plate as an additional armour.
According to the author this tank belonged to the Kampfgruppe 902 of the Panzer-Lehr-Division. This KG 902 was commanded by Oberst Joachim von Porschinger. The tank in the picture was knocked out or abandoned at Oberwambach, Luxembourg. The KG 902 took part in the Battle for Bastogne. I find it very likely there were more Tiger Is in this KG.
As I mentioned, the tank in the picture is an early type. I think it's possible it was originally from some replacement company or from a workshop. Who knows?
Hope this helped.
Cheers,
Mikko |
