Hi Stephen,
good question. I'm by far no expert on vehicles used in the Dutch East Indies, but since I'm Dutch and my grandfather served in the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indies Army)I started wondering why not use these vehicles in the Netherlands. I think this is because at the time these vehicles were ordered the thread of a German invasion was not anticipated. The East Indies however were one of the major sources of income for the Dutch at the time and therefore had to be defended against both external and internal threads. Revolts and uprsings could occur at any time amongst the native inhabitants and I guess the Dutch government decided that defense of the colony had the highest priority. Also more AFVs than in Holland were located in the Dutch West Indies, probably also to defend the oil- and mineral rich possessions in the Carribean and South-America.
