John,
The early straps were made of leather, later these straps were made in a nylon webbing material that ranged in color from dark to light green (aging lightened this). there are pix of later vehicles with leather straps also. The tools were sometimes painted the color of the tank (its easier than removing them, right?), sometimes they weren't. Its difficult to see this in b/w pix.
