An observatiom on pioneer tools from 21 years active duty with the US Army. Pioneer tools with new issue vehicles were painted the base color of the vehicle, wood and all. However, -10 operator maintanence requires unpainted wood treated with linseed oil, so out comes the sand paper, Replacement pioneer tools usually looked like they came from the local hardware store, such as D handle shovels with black blades, wood shafts and red handles. Go figure.
