Hi
I think the problem is that the 105 is a howitzer. So it's made for lobbing a shell a long distance. AT guns usually fire shells on a flat trajectory at high velocity. So a longer barrel wouldn't have mattered much, because the gun itself is not designed for that role (and the 105 on the Sherman has a shorter barrel than the 105 mm field gun). The 76mm gun or 17 pounder was a better choice for an AT gun.
I read the British 25 pounder was pretty good against tanks, but I think they were used in a pinch, rather than as first choice. Likewise, the 105 was there for artillery support, not for AT use.
That's all guesswork of course...
