The initial amrmament upgrades to the 75mm Sherman gun tank were devised with what was available at the time, the US 76.2mm gun and the British 17pdr. During WW2, both of these were developed and emplaced in the Shermans.

An effective 105mm calibre tank cannon wasn't developed until after WW2 by the West. The Soviets used a 100mm cannon effectively in WW2.

Howitzers were meant to fire their shells with high trajectory whereas tank cannon needed flat-tracjectory.
