 Subject:  Gunners tools' questionList thread.

 Date:  Aug 14, 2005
 From:  Alex Hill
Studying images of gun crews in action, it seems sometimes they're using a 'rammer' (long pole with a flat end) and on other occasions, for want of a better word, a stuka (long pole with a larger soft looking cylindrical end- chamois leather?) Am I right in assuming that two seperate tools are used in the loading process, the 'rammer' for the shoving the shell in and the 'stuka' for cleaning/cooling the barrel, or is just that there were different types of the same device? Presumably, these items don't utilise the cleaning rods that are generally strapped to the trails?
Interesting to note that in the same photo's the crews generally have a large tin scuttle close by, presumably to use in conjunction with the 'stuka'.

Thanks,
Al
