From what I recall about mixed variants, tank replacements, repairs of older tanks, etc. caused a great mis-match of variants at any given time. I've never heard of a situation like M4A3s in 1st Platoon and M4A1s in 2nd Platoon. There was never a need to differentiate them like that so whatever unit had the need, they got the next available tank, regardless of subvariant.
