The M4 sure had AT capabilities. Against the earlier Pz IVs and the Pz III, it was comparable in performance.
Main drawback of the basic design was, that it had it lineage back the M2 medium tank. This design had 1 37mm gun as main armamament. The M3 Lee/Grant were stop gaps, as the US Army realised a 75mm weapon was needed. By the time the Sherman was ready on the drawing boards, it was a weapon well capable of fighting enemy tanks of its time, so that would be the Panzer III and IV, with the long barreled 50 and the short barreled 75 guns respectively.
The Army Ground Forces and Ordnancen (repsonsible for designing and testing) failed to recognise the arms race which went on in Europe. The British did, but they had poor tanks. This is all made clear very well by the fact that the premier main battle tank used by US Forces when first commited to Africa, was actually the M3 Stuart. Sure, they had the Lee and Sherman already, but the Stuart was considerd a viable fighting vehicle.
so the Sherman was a good weapon, but not by 1944 anymore. Credit has to be given thought, because the design was capable of upgrading in armour, weapons and suspension, and the basic automotives were sound.
