Hi James,

We're there to help each other, so you're welcome. There are also some other errors in the instruction sheet for kit 6166: for example, the periscopes are placed the wrong way up, the visors look inside instead of outside the Nashorn. Furthermore, parts M15 and M14 should not be glued to the model, as they are needed to place the large towing hooks in the interior correctly (parts L4). I placed parts M15 and M14 with the use of white glue, which is strong enough to hold it in place, but it can easily be removed without leaving traces of glue. I used this glue also in the placement of the tracks. In fact, none of the wheels and return rollers has been glued with normal glue, the entire set can be removed to place the tracks much easier. I glued the single link tracks (they are not bad by the way, but Friul or Modelkasten would be a better choice if you're not fond of mud)placed and fitted it on the model, removed it, so that the tracks can be painted separately and placed on later on. Try this is you have the wheels and return rollers glued with normal modelling glue... that wil be a tough job with the minimum of space betweent the fenders and drive sprocket. The spare wheels, and one of the open shell boxes have also been glued with white glue to make the paint job easier (the box can be removed and placed back once the detail painting has been done).
Yesterday, I discovered I have made a large mistake int he construction: I place part L3, the rear lower hull plate, on top of the bottom (part C1)instead of on the lowe chassis. So I had to remove it, which succeeded without too much damage.
If you ask me, this is one of the greatest kits available. The Nashorn is an interesting Panzerjäger (large gun...) with pretty much interior detail. Therefore I usually have more fun in constructing open topped Panzers. Besides that, the DML kit is great, although the instructions could be much better. I still have some questions left by the way: at the right side near the left shell box there should have been a radio equipment set, but was this the case for all Panzers, or only for command versions? Furthermore, there should have been a travel lock for the gun inside the Nashorn. Some modellers have placed this lock in their (scratch built) model (Brian Wells excellent version), but I have not seen this lock on war time photos. Could it be, that it has been removed, as it rested on the bottom whcih would be very uncomfortable for the crew? Or has this part been used in some versions, while it has been ommited on later versions? DML has not included the travel lock in its kit.

Best regards,

Vincent

I have almost finished my Nashorn OOTB, but I still have some
