Chapter 3: Up-Armoring the Turret
Belton Cooper recalls the mantlet armor being 2' by 5'. Given photos of this, I don't think he was correct. It scales out to more like 1.5' x 5'. I carved out a rectangle from .040" styrene. In reality, this was a piece that was cut from a Panther glacis (maybe I'll put some zimmerit traces on the backside, eh?) and welded onto the SP mantlet. I used templates that I drew from the Accurate Armour kit to develop my "batwing" armor. I added the flame-cut edging with an oval shaped needle file to the appropriate locations. I added weld beads with putty and tube cement. |
