Well, it depends upon the nature of the texture to be replicated. Most
American and many British castings are relatively smooth, so what I use
in those cases is a layer of Mr Surface 500 painted on over a relatively
small area and then stippled with a crappy brush (the Testors plastic
bristle brushes are good for this) until it dries enough to form little
peaks as it is stippled. Once it dries it leaves a nice texture that
well represents the rougher American style castings. Some castings were
particularly smooth so a lightly scuff over the surface with 600 grit to
simulate that.
Some of the British, Canadian and Russian castings are quite textured. A
close look will show that a lot of this texture actually comes from
rough shaping of the "green" sand in the mould. On many pieces actual
trowel marks are readily visible showing where workmen changed shapes or
patched bits that fell out of the mould. The late Ram II at Borden looks
like it has been carved from clay with a small knife, its so well
marked. I replicate this by using a modestly sized burr in my dremel and
going over the entire surface of the model. I use short strokes and
generally follow the features of the kit. If there is a corner or
feature I am trying to texture, I try to imagine how a mould maker might
move his trowel inside such a mould and do the same. A light scuff with
the 600 grit to clean up any fuzz and then I stipple with the Mr
surfacer over the textured surface.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to show that in late chapters.
