Chapter 2 - The Mail is Done
I painted the mail with a couple of coats of thinned lamp black (regular oils). I let the first wash dry for a day, then brushed off the excess paint. Then I added the second coat of black wash (50/50 oil and thinner), and let it dry a few days. I then used the head of a pin to burnish the high points. It turned out fairly well. The helm/cap and sword are covered in masking solution still. I'll be working on those last.
I'm sort of happy with the face. The face was painted with a standard mix of white, yellow and red (the water mixable oils). He had a very pale complexion and it was overshaded when I was done. I used a bit of white and a bit of sienna for highlights and shadows. After a day, I went back and gave the face and hands a very faint wash of burnt umber acrylic paint. I laid on a few coats of that to add some color to the skin. I painted the eyes with a dot of dark blue for each. The right eye seems fine to me, and the left may need redoing. Comments on that would be welcome!
I have to dull down the colors of the clothing a bit, and I'll be using some pastel chalks on him for that purpose. I wasn't happy with the trousers/breeches and leggings, so I went over them with some yellow ochre and burnt umber gouache paints. Lots of faint coats. I like the color of the leggings, but the breeches need work. I also added sepia with a very fine brush to the borders of the leggings, and as a shadow color to the breeches. I've been adding a bit of color to the base step by step with various earthtones brushed on. I painted what looks like a parchment with an off white, then drew on my version of arabic writing with a liner brush in sepia. It kind of looks like writing...
