The (now defunct) AFV Interiors pages on the SdKfz 223 & 223 had some good pictures of the interior set-up in the nose of there cars. From this information two things:
- First, the battery closest to the hull was mounted higher than the other, on a step that appears to be a hull indentation to accomodate suspension parts. This step was about the height of the battery, slightly longer, and occurred at all 4 wheel stations
- Second, while the pictures from the 223 manual show two batteries, the 222 appears to have some sort of (roughly battery sized)storage box instead. Perhaps the FU10 radio in the 223 needed the extra power.
With only limited info available, it's hard to say which way to go on the number of batteries, but the indentations are clearly shown on pictures of the hull sections prior to vehicle assembly.
