Chapter 2 - Lower Hull

I almost always start my kits by building the lower hull. In this case, the build up of the Dragon lower hull is pretty straight forward. The hull has its legacy back to the Dragon M4A1 (cast hull) kits so the sponson fillers are angled at the front to accommodate the cast upper hull. Dragon provides an adaptor for the squared off shape of the M4A2. To fit the Legend upper hull, I had cut the adaptor back by about 3mm. Also, the Dragon hull is a bit too wide to fit the Legend hull so I had to trim about 1mm on each side of the sponson fillers. Otherwise, I left off the rear tow hitch since the early Sherman IIIs didn’t have this installed. I also added a row of bolts where the transmission cover fits to the lower hull. These are commonly left off nearly all of the injection molded lower hulls.

I used the Formations early cast transmission cover (F002) and even though it’s designed for the Italeri lower hull, the fit to the Dragon parts was quite good. Just a little trimming and a tiny amount of filler and it fit right in.

Finally, I fitted a shelf to the front of the upper hull using sheet plastic. The purpose of this is to provide a platform for mounting the driver and co-driver figures. I set the shelf height based on the Warriors figure sets I’ll be using.

Overall, this part of the build was simple and straight forward.
